Nechite

Nechite is a very small village with 50 inhabitants; it is typically Spanish being full of pretty whitewashed houses and is extremely tranquil, with only one road in and out of the village; therefore there is no passing traffic. The village of Nechite is situated in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, in an unspoilt area called the Alpujarras,.which is criss crossed with walking routes, the main GR7 goes right past the door

Driving Over Lemons; by Chris Stewart

Nechite is on the main network of walking routes, which criss-cross the area right on the main GR7. There are no shops or bars in the village, however the bread man delivers every day and the fish man delivers Thursdays and Saturdays.

The nearest town to Nechite is Valor just 1 kilometre away, where you will find an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the summer months and a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. Six kilometres away is the larger town of Ugijar, which also has a choice of shops bars and restaurants. None of these however can be described as large.

The whole area is dotted with white villages and small towns all of which have their own character and are well worth exploring. The natural beauty of the area along with its flora and fauna make it a paradise for walkers, photographers, bird watchers and anyone who just wants to get away from it all.

the Alpujarras

This is the area situated between the Southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the Northern slopes of the Sierra Contraviessa in the South of Andalucia between Malaga and Almeria about 1 ¼. hours from the coast, It is an area of stunning natural beauty, each twist and turn of the almost traffic free roads reveals a new vista of the mountains and surrounding area.

The climate is, as you would expect for Southern Spain – hot & dry most of the time, if a little cooler than on the coast, as Nechite stands at about 1,000 metres above sea level. Nechite is particularly well situated; approximately 40 minutes drive from Puerto de Ragua, the pass over the Sierra Nevada, during the winter and spring the snow-covered slopes boast cross-country skiing and tobogganing.

Just over one hours drive in the opposite direction is the coast and a number of popular resorts and beaches and 3 top class Golf courses.

a little further...

On the days when you get the urge to leave the area, the coast is only just over 1 hour away, there is the lively resort of Roquetas and in contrast the small unspoilt coves in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Almeria is 1 ¼ hours away and is well worth a visit, particularly the Alcazaba, a Moorish fort.

At El Ejido 1 hour away there is go karting for those seeking more thrills. Inland, about one and a quarter hours away is the town of Granada, this is well worth a visit with its mix of modern stores and traditional Moorish bazaars. It is also the location of the Alhambra Palace, a must to visit.
